Listening to Wisdom and Trusting God's Guidance in Parenting

In my opinion parenting is a journey filled with ups and downs, moments of joy, and seasons of uncertainty. Lots of uncertainty! For many of us, it's a role that demands not only our best efforts but also our openness to wisdom and God's divine guidance. It’s a role that humbles most of us, almost daily! And as I reflect on the importance of words and the impact they have; I'm reminded of how essential it is to lean into wisdom and trust God with what we cannot control.

I can distinctly recall, the pressure and stress I felt trying to “get it right”. Often hearing the words and intonations I’d spoken come back to me from my then todlers….oh those were memorable times! But, one thing I tried to keep in mind, was to be intentional. To be ever so mindful of the words.

The Bible teaches us in Proverbs 18:21: "Death and life are in the power of the tongue." This verse speaks directly to the weight our words carry. Sure, sometimes we get frustrated, but as parents, every word we speak matters. Our words carry profound weight. They have the power to build confidence or shatter it, to ignite faith or foster fear, to lift up or bring down. The words we speak today become the lens through which our children will see themselves tomorrow.

Yet, speaking life into our children goes beyond good intentions. It calls for humility—a heart willing to be shaped by the wisdom of others. The Bible, in Titus 2, highlights the importance of mentorship: older women are entrusted with the role of guiding and teaching the younger ones. Parenting was never meant to be a solitary endeavor. The wisdom shared from one season to another is a treasure that enriches our journey, offering clarity in challenges and encouragement in our efforts.

Even more essential is remaining open to God's direction. Parenting isn't about achieving perfection but about staying faithful. Doing our best and trusting God to perfect those things concerning them ( see Psalm 138:8) It means attuning our hearts to His guidance, especially in moments of uncertainty, and trusting His higher plan when the way forward feels unclear. We pour love, wisdom, and truth into our children, while surrendering the results to God, knowing He is faithful.

Every word spoken, every prayer lifted, and every lesson taught is like planting seeds that will one day grow and flourish. When we embrace the wisdom passed down to us, remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit's leading, and commit to speaking life over the next generation, we create a legacy rooted in faith, hope, and love.

💬 Who has spoken wisdom into your life, and how has it shaped your parenting or perspective? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
